Monday: Jesus Says
What You Need: No supplies needed.
What You Do:
Before the Activity: Have your children stand in front of you.
During the Activity: Instruct your children to listen to and watch you. You will do these movements for the children to mimic: touch your head, jump up and down, stomp, clap hands, twist, and touch toes. Instruct the children to only mimic the movements that follow “Jesus says.” Repeat as desired.
What You Say:
Before the Activity: “Sunday, in our Bible story, Jesus’ friends did what He said to do.”
During the Activity: “Let’s practice listening so that we can listen to Jesus, too. I will do movements. If I say, ‘Jesus says,’ before I move, then you can do the movement, too! Only do the movement if Jesus says to.”
Tuesday: Love Talk
What You Need: “People Cards” Activity Page (Download HERE), cardstock, red yarn, scissors, and masking tape
What You Do:
Before the Activity: Copy “People Cards” onto cardstock and cut the pictures apart, one set of six. Cut a long piece of red yarn.
NOTE: Test your red yarn with the “People Cards” to make sure the yarn is long enough to connect all of the pictures and make a heart.
During the Activity: Tape the “People Cards” to the floor in such a way that when you connect the cards with the red yarn it makes a heart. Tape one end of the yarn to the first card. Encourage the children to repeat, “Jesus wants to be your friend forever” as you go to each card. Each time you are at one of the cards, tape that section of the red yarn to the card. When you have gone to each of the six cards, the red yarn will make a heart shape.
What You Say:
During the Activity: “Peter learned that Jesus wants everyone to be His friend forever. That means we need to tell everyone that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. Hey, will you help me tell all of these people Jesus wants to be their friend forever? And when we’re done, we can see what shape the yarn makes. Ready? (Tape the yarn to the first card and say together) Jesus wants to be your friend forever! (Tape yarn to second card and say together) Jesus wants to be your friend forever.” (Continue taping the yarn and repeating the phrase “Jesus wants to be your friend forever” with all six cards.)
After the Activity: “We did it! We told all of the people that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. What shape did the red yarn make? (Pause.) Yes! The red yarn made a heart. A heart is the perfect shape to remind us that Jesus loves everyone, and everyone can believe in Jesus. Right? (Pause.) Right! Who can believe in Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can believe in Jesus!”
Wednesday: Ways to Say, “Jesus Loves You!”
What You Need: No supplies needed.
What You Do:
During the Activity: Gather your children. Teach your children how to say, “Jesus loves you” in several different languages as time and interest allow.
What You Say:
During the Activity: “Today, I want to teach you how to say, ‘Jesus loves me’ in different languages!
“First, let’s learn it in sign language. This is the language you use to speak to people who can’t hear. So, we use our hands. Watch this. (Demonstrate.)
“Jesus (Press the middle finger of your right hand to your left palm, then press your left middle finger to your right palm.)
“Loves (Cross arms over chest.)
“You. (Point to others.)
“In Spanish and Portuguese, Jesus loves you is Jesús te ama.
“In Chinese, Jesus loves you is Yēsū ài nǐ. (Pronounced ‘yea soo eye knee’.)
“In French, Jesus loves you is Jésus t’aime.
“In Swahili, Jesus loves you is Yesu anakupenda.
“In German, Jesus loves you is Jesus liebt dich.
“And in English, we say, ‘Jesus loves you!’”
After the Activity: “Great job, friends! Everyone all over the world needs to hear the GOOD news: Jesus loves you! We can tell everyone around us that good news so they can believe in Jesus, too. Who can believe in Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can believe in Jesus.”
Thursday: Everyone, Everywhere
What You Need: “Purple House,” “Yellow House,” “Orange House,” “Green House,” and “House Cards” Activity Pages (Download HERE); white cardstock; tape; and scissors
What You Do:
Before the Activity: Make one copy of “Purple House,” “Yellow House,” “Orange House,” and “Green House” on white cardstock. Make enough copies of “House Cards” on white cardstock so that when cut apart, each child will draw at least one card; cut cards apart.
During the Activity: Tape one of the house pages to each wall in the room or spread them out on one wall, whatever works best for your space. Place the “House Cards” face down for the children to take turns drawing a card. Each time a child draws a card, they must go (hop, skip, walk, tip-toe, jump, etc.) to the house on the wall that matches it and tell the people living there, “Jesus wants to be your friend forever.”
What You Say:
During the Activity: “In Sunday’s story, Peter learned that Jesus wants everyone to believe in Him. No matter what they look like, what language they speak, or where they live, Jesus loves them; and He wants to be their friend forever! I have a game that will help us practice telling everyone about Jesus. All you do is draw a card, go to the house on the wall that matches your card, and tell them, ‘Jesus wants to be your friend forever.’ Got it? Let’s play!” (Play as long as the children are having fun. Reshuffle the cards and play again when all of the cards have been drawn.)
After the Activity: “You did a great job telling everyone, everywhere that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. It’s important that we tell everyone about Jesus, because everyone can believe in Jesus. And that means you, too! Who can believe in Jesus? [Bottom Line] I can believe in Jesus!”
Friday: Journal and Prayer
What You Need: Paperclip “Memory Verse Card” in your Bible at John 20:31. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen.
PARENT: “Today, we’ll hook arms with a friend or two and walk together to journal and prayer spot. So, find a friend and hook arms. Even hooks arms with me! (Demonstrate.) Okay follow me!
“We made it! Let’s sit down and talk about Sunday’s Bible story. One, two, three, sit down with me! (Open the Bible and lay it in front of the children.)
“Our Bible story, Sunday, it was about a man named Peter. Peter learned that Jesus loves everyone, and He wants to be everyone’s friend forever. It doesn’t matter where people live, what they look like, what language they speak, or what their favorite food is; Jesus loves everyone and wants to be their friend! We can read Peter’s story right here in the Bible. (Hold up Bible.)
“Peter’s story helps us know that we can believe in Jesus, too, because Jesus loves everyone and wants to be everyone’s friend. So, tell me, who can believe in Jesus?”
CHILDREN and PARENT: [Bottom Line] “I can believe in Jesus!”
PARENT: “You sure can! And the Bible verse we have been learning even says that the stories in the Bible are written so that we can believe in Jesus. It says . . . (Turn the pages of your Bible to the Memory Verse Card.)
“These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, John 20:31. (Close Bible and lay it down.)
“We have been practicing this verse for a long time. Let’s stand up and say it together with the motions one more time, then anyone who wants can try to say it.”
CHILDREN and PARENT: “These are written (open your hands like a book) so that you (point out) may believe (point to head) that Jesus is the Christ, (point up) the Son of God. (Rock baby.) John 20:31.” (Open your hands like a book.)
PARENT: “You sound ready to me! Let’s sit down. When it’s your turn to say the Bible verse, you can stand up and try it.”
Give each child the opportunity to say the verse on their own.
PARENT: “I am so proud of you, (child’s name)! (Repeat with each child as they try the Bible verse.)
“Now, it’s time to write in our journal and pray. (Hold journal and fun-shaped pen.)
“Peter learned that he should tell everyone about Jesus, because Jesus wants everyone to believe in Him and be His friend forever. I think we should make a list of people we can tell about Jesus. It can be anyone, because Jesus wants us to tell everyone that they can believe in Him. When I say your name, tell me one person you can tell about Jesus. (Say each child’s name and write down what they say. Remember to print the names so the children can recognize their names and the letters.)
“We have another special list of people today. Let’s use our list when we talk to God. Would anyone like to pray before I pray?”
Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.
Prayer
PARENT: “Dear God, we want everyone to believe in Jesus. We want everyone to know that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. Help us to tell (read the list the children made) that Jesus is alive, and He wants to be their friend forever. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
